[ecm] Dinner this Sunday...

Hi,  

Please let me know ahead of time if you have any dietary restrictions due to
allergy, etc. so I can make adjustments.  If vegetarian, please be specific
- there's quite a range from no meat to vegan.  I selected several recipes
that can be adapted so don't hesitate to join us.

This is a Chinese dinner and cooking class so you will get the opportunity
to make a few things yourself - don't dress up.  There is only one stir-fry
dish in the lot so you'll learn some other techniques.  This is easy stuff
you can do for yourself and/or friends without much work.  Some of it you
will not find in any restaurant in Fort Collins.  I'll give you all of the
recipes online so you can use them again in the future.

Episcopal Campus & Young Adult Ministries in Ft Collins

            This coming Sunday, Sept 17, 5 PM – meet at St Paul’s to carpool
to the home of Dave & Judy Matthews.  Dave is the master cook who’ll guide
each of us through preparing our own Chinese feast.  No later than 8 getting
home.  This is going to be very cool!  Please give a call to 482-2668 if you
think you can come

            We had about 12 last Sunday night for pizza – welcome Betsey!
Also Sidney, Sarah, Kelley, Eric, Jess, Brian, Dave, and Professor Ranil
Wickramasinghe and his wife, Professor Xianghong Qian, brought baby Aroshe,
class of ’28 – all enjoyed salad & pizza & chips & soda & Otter Pops &
cheesecake.  Pix on the website soon

            And I enjoyed hanging in the library lobby for “God & Coffee”
yesterday morning 9:15 - 10:15.  Got to visit with Kelley, Sarah & Sidney.
I always wear my collar, so you can spot me in the crowd

            So here’s our schedule so far:

Wednesday, Sept. 27:  9:15 AM – “God & Coffee,” library lobby.

Thursday, Sept 28:         7 PM, Taizé-style worship in Danforth Chapel (on
the oval).  Come for 30 minutes of prayer, meditation & music.

Saturday, Sept 30:       9 AM – “Got Episcopal?”  An all-day Inquirers’
Class for anyone who wants to know more about the Episcopal Church, led by
moi.  Lunch provided (if you register!  482-2668).  Child care provided on
request.  Goes ‘til 5 PM.  And a ton of fun.  This is an offering to the
parish, but you can come too if you’d like.  This is a confirmation
preparation class, in case that’s important

Sunday, Oct 1:             Noon – meet at St Paul’s to carpool up to the
mountains for the afternoon.  John Roberts has a sweet cabin up on the way
to Estes.  Great for walking, or just porch-sitting.  Cookout, and back by
6.  Call 482-2668 if you can come.  Bring snackies, food provided

Wednesday, Oct 4:       7 PM – A Blessing of the Animals, in observance of
the Feast of St Francis.  Bring your animal companion
 or not.  It’s great
either way!

Friday, Oct 6:               Diocese of Colorado annual convention, in
Denver.  Sarah & 1 other lucky contestant will lead evening devotions for
several hundred delegates.  Are you game?  About 5 PM.  Probably some
interesting stuff going on. I arranged for a meal with the keynote speaker
of convention, courtesy of the Colorado Episcopal Foundation.  Let me know
if you can come down for this!  Call me @ 482-2668 to learn more

Saturday, Oct 7:           More convention.  Kelley needs someone to help
her lead noon devotions.  Call

Friday, Oct 13:             Brothers John & Leandro from Taizé will be in
the North Ballroom of the Lory Center – 

            10 AM – "The Taizé Experience: Living a Parable of Community."
An informal time for student ministry leaders & the brothers

            2 PM – worship, music, meditation & bible study w/ John &
Leandro

            4:30 PM – worship, music, meditation & bible study w/ John &
Leandro – timed for high school groups to participate.

                                    This will be an amazing experience; I
hope you can take part in this day!

Thursday, Nov 16 (tentative):  7 PM – “U2charist”, a worship service set to
the music of Bono & the boys from Ireland.  Focused on the One Campaign, the
Millennium Development Goals, and making poverty history.  See www.one.org

Dear friends,

            We observed a grim anniversary last Monday, remembering with
sorrow the cowardly attack on our nation 5 years ago on September 11.  As
the prayers were and are offered for those who died in New York, Virginia
and Pennsylvania, and for their loved ones, it’s important to remember many
others as well.  Pray for all who have died, of all faiths and
nationalities, as a result of conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Pray for
those wounded and injured.  And pray for their families and loved ones.

            With the death of each American in Iraq (the number is around
2,700) we grow closer to the number who perished on September 11, 2001.  The
seldom-mentioned figure of more than 10,000 American service personnel
wounded is staggering – through advances in field medicine fewer are killed
on the battlefield, but 5 times as many are casualties, with many suffering
life-long disabilities and grievous injuries.  And let us not forget the
tens of thousands of Iraqis killed and wounded, many of them non-combatants.

            As followers of the Prince of Peace, it seems to me impossible
to reconcile what is being done in our name with our faith.  Pray for the
peace of God in our world, and work to make that peace real in your life.
No action is too small in the work of being a Christian.  AND there is a
prophetic side to Jesus’ teaching and life – to speak truth to power.  Don’t
hesitate to speak to your elected representatives and their agents about
what you value as a result of your faith.  “Peace I leave with you; my own
peace I give to you,” said Jesus.  Empower us to make it so, dear God.
Empower us to make it so – on earth as it is in heaven.  Amen.
