Young Adult Festival

6/16/06

Since my last write up, we’ve seen a lot happen. On Wednesday night, I
attended the Special Commission’s open hearing on four of the proposed
resolutions that are being brought forward following the Windsor Report.
The Grand Ballroom was packed to capacity. As people left, those seats were
quickly filled. The hearing was very interesting. We heard from many
people including a few members of our own delegation. Following that, I
attended Compline with those who I had attended the hearing with. Compline
has been very spirit filled all week long. A different person has led
worship each night. We have repeated the Taizé music and the Celtic music,
but even though it is the same, it is different- played in different styles
or with different flares. It has been a pleasure to do Compline every
night.

Mike and I have been attending the 6:00 AM diocesan caucus each morning. It
has been interesting to be a part of the caucus and an honor to be included
in the proceedings. The delegation has been listening to each other on
where they stand on different issues. They asked Mike and me to speak this
morning. In preparing to make my statement, I have learned about myself and
the church as a whole. It was a reminder that sometimes the Holy Spirit
will lead in directions that seem completely foreign and frightening to us.
I am very thankful to our delegation for taking the time and making the
effort to hear the young adults of the church. It brings renewed spirit to
the continuous hope of the future of the Episcopal Church in Colorado. I am
very excited to see what the next years will bring.

I attended the House of Bishops for a couple of hours on Thursday. One of
the first resolutions that I watched was in regard to retired bishops voting
in the house. It was decided that retired bishops would no longer vote, but
that they would always be welcome in the HOB to speak, thereby bringing
their wisdom and knowledge to the house. The HOB was fun to watch, the
setting is very different than the house of Deputies. In conversation with
fellow YAF participants, there is speculation that perhaps part of the
difference is that the House of Bishops is more personal as it is smaller
and most of the bishops know each other. The House of Deputies was expected
to pick up today and tomorrow.

Yesterday at the YAF we had a panel on Social Justice. We had four guests
who talked about their experiences and what brought them to this particular
call within their ministries. We spoke about Episcopal Relief and
Development, helping addicts, homeless, and all others in need.

Today we had a speaker who talked about what leadership was and how we are
all leaders. It has been exciting and wonderful to be here. I look forward
to the rest of my time here. I will end this day’s article with a quote
that was repeated during this session but originated during the Presiding
Bishop’s Forum on Reconciliation (I apologize to the writer if it is not
exact): “Our ministry starts where our greatest passion and the church’s
greatest need meet.”
