Greetings -
Sarah Beetch, president of the Episcopal Campus Ministry of CSU, will drop
you a line tomorrow. Suffice to say we've got some cool things cooking.
Below is a forwarded message from Young Adult Ministries of the Episcopal
Church. This sounds like an interesting use of a summer. Check it out!
See you soon,
In Christ,

Subject: Vocation Exploration at Sewanee
Lilly Theological Exploration of Vocation at Sewanee
The Lilly Theological Exploration of Vocation at the University of the
South, Sewanee, Tenn., invites undergraduate students at colleges and
universities across the nation to apply for the fifth Summer Discernment
Institute June 5-July 27, 2006. Applications for 16 placement openings in
the institute are due Feb. 20. More information and a copy of the
application form can be found at www.sewanee.edu/lillyproj/lsdi.html
<http://www.sewanee.edu/lillyproj/lsdi.html%20> or call 931-598-1869.
Students interested in exploring vocations in ordained ministry or service
with nonprofit organizations will be accepted into the eight-week program
and receive a stipend for their work in their chosen internship. Students
spend the first week at Sewanee engaged in activities that help prepare them
for their six-week internships. Students return to Sewanee the final week
for an opportunity for debriefing and reflection on their vocational
experience and its values.
The Summer Discernment Institute also offers opportunities for internships
with secular organizations or other religious organizations such as the
Children's Defense Fund, the Grameen Bank, the International Partnership for
Service Learning, the Center for Action and Contemplation, the Society of
St. John the Evangelist, L'Arche, and Youth World International. Other
internships have included work in medical research, support of at-risk
youth, and environmental concerns. A total of 114 students from more than 29
institutions have participated from 2002 through 2005. Several of these
students are enrolled in divinity programs at institutions as varied as
Harvard, Yale, Vanderbilt, Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and
Cambridge University in England. Others are in physician's assistant
studies, graduate programs in education, and biological-medical research.
Still others have gone on to be youth ministers in Episcopal parishes and
teachers in public and private schools.
The Summer Discernment Institute is becoming widely recognized throughout
the Episcopal Church as a highly useful vehicle of discernment for men and
women of college age who are considering a call to ordained ministry. The
Pastoral Leadership Search Effort (PLSE) of the Episcopal Church recognizes
that this internship program provides a unique opportunity for students to
work in parish and other organizational environments and obtain a firsthand
understanding of what a life of active ministry entails.
Applications for the 2006 Summer Discernment Institute are due by Feb. 20.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Students may nominate their own placements. Students in all
four years of college, including seniors, are encouraged to apply. Lilly
Program Director Jim Goodmann said, "Students have been the most creative
source for internships these past four years and have originated sites that
none of us could have foreseen. Their imagination and initiative have
contributed mightily to the success of the program."
